Central London Road Closures January 2026: Regent St, Shaftesbury Ave
Major London road closures for essential works in Jan 2026

Drivers and commuters in the heart of the capital are set for significant disruption as a major programme of essential maintenance works triggers a wave of road closures across Westminster this January. Utility companies and transport authorities, including Cadent Energy, Thames Water, and Transport for London (TfL), are coordinating a series of projects that will affect dozens of streets.

Key Road Closures and Lane Restrictions

The scale of the works is extensive, impacting some of Central London's most famous thoroughfares. Regent Street will be closed for a full day on January 14 for Cadent Gas works, while a significant closure on Shaftesbury Avenue is scheduled from 8am on January 16 until 5pm on January 18 for Thames Water operations.

Other major disruptions include a road closure on Pall Mall from January 5 to 9, and a lane closure on the busy Piccadilly from January 9 to 10. On Oxford Street, a lane closure will be in effect between 10pm on January 6 and 2am on January 7 for TfL works.

Long-Term Disruption and Other Affected Areas

Some projects will cause prolonged inconvenience. Notably, Enford Street will be shut from January 19 until June 4 for TfL works, representing a closure of over four months. Furthermore, the Marylebone Flyover will be closed from 9pm on January 9 until 5am on March 23, a period spanning more than two months.

The list of affected roads is comprehensive. Key closures include:

  • Burlington Gardens/Savile Row: Closed from January 26 to February 6 (UK Power Networks).
  • Storey's Gate/Victoria Street: Closed from 7pm January 5 to 4am January 10.
  • Park Lane: Closed nightly from 10pm January 12 to 5am January 27 (Cadent Gas).
  • New Bond Street: Closed for the duration of January 29.

Works are also planned for Great George Street, Knightsbridge, Baker Street, and Gloucester Place, among many others.

Planning Ahead for Travel in London

The coordinated works involve multiple agencies, including Westminster City Council, Virgin Media, UK Power Networks, and Vodafone. The Local Democracy Reporting Service compiled the data using the online directory one.network.

With such widespread disruption affecting the Westminster area and beyond, including a separate road in central London shut until August, travellers are strongly advised to check detailed closure maps and plan alternative routes well in advance. The works underscore the ongoing challenge of maintaining London's ageing infrastructure while minimising impact on the city's daily flow.
