A major fire broke out near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street in Walthamstow, east London, on the evening of July 12, 2026, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents. The blaze engulfed a house, several garden sheds, and a railway embankment near Wood Street station, producing thick smoke visible for miles across the capital.
Emergency response and evacuations
At the height of the incident, twenty fire engines and approximately 125 firefighters were deployed to contain the flames, which threatened to spread to additional homes along the railway tracks. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed no injuries were reported. Residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut due to the smoke.
Local MP Stella Creasy stated that an 'electrical fire on the train line' was the suspected cause, though the official investigation continues. Some locals speculated on social media that a fallen tree on the overhead railway line triggered the fire.
Community support and travel disruption
Community members and businesses quickly mobilized to assist evacuees, with emergency shelters set up before many were allowed to return home. One resident reported that neighbors on unaffected streets provided water to those forced to flee. By 10:30 pm, the blaze was under control, but travel disruption persists on the Weaver London Overground line, which remains suspended between Chingford and Hackney Downs for urgent track repairs. Transport for London expects the closure to last all day on July 13.
Fire service statement
Assistant Commissioner Tom Goodall of the LFB described the incident as 'significant' and expressed gratitude that no injuries occurred. 'We have worked with the local authority and our other partners to set up two rest centres for residents who have been evacuated from their homes. They are all being supported at this time and we are hopeful that the majority of them will be able to return home tonight,' Goodall said.
He added: 'One house was alight, and a second home has suffered damage to a rear extension. The gardens of around 30 properties have also unfortunately been affected by the fire. However, crews worked extremely hard to prevent the fire from spreading to further homes. A railway embankment was also alight and this has caused disruption to the Weaver London Overground line. We have worked closely with Transport for London and the British Transport Police to support passengers on stopped trains. All passengers have now left the railway.'
The brigade maintained a significant presence overnight to fully extinguish the fire.
