Tower Bridge shut by police after incident

Police have closed Tower Bridge to both traffic and pedestrians following an emergency services incident late on Sunday night, July 12. The bridge was shut in both directions, with the exact nature of the incident not yet disclosed.

Police confirm closure

A City of London Police spokesperson said just before 11pm: "Tower Bridge is currently closed to traffic and pedestrians in both directions. Please use alternative routes." The closure prompted diversions for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Earlier protest activity

The closure came after activists staged a protest on the iconic London landmark earlier on Sunday. Demonstrators hung a banner and a Palestinian flag from Tower Bridge, calling for urgent action to save Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. The Palestinian doctor has been held in Israeli custody for over 530 days. Dr. Hussam was detained after Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital, then the last functioning major hospital in North Gaza, along with other medical staff and patients.
