Dolly Parton Dominates US Favorability Poll, Surpassing Political Heavyweights
A recent survey has unveiled that country music icon Dolly Parton holds the highest net favorability among global figures in the United States, significantly outperforming former President Barack Obama and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Conducted by the University of Massachusetts and market research firm YouGov in early April, the poll assessed over 20 international luminaries, with Parton emerging as the clear favorite.
Staggering Poll Results Show Parton's Unmatched Appeal
Of the 1,000 Americans surveyed, an impressive 70% expressed a favorable impression of Dolly Parton, the 11-time Grammy winner, while only 5% viewed her unfavorably. This translates to a net favorability rating of 65%, a margin that dwarfs her closest competitors. Barack Obama, who served as U.S. president from 2009 to 2017, secured the second-highest net favorability at 14%, with 50% favorability and 36% unfavorability. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, leading Ukraine's defense against Russian invasion since February 2022, rounded out the top three with a net favorability of 12%, based on 35% favorable and 22% unfavorable opinions.
Parton and Obama were the only figures in the poll to receive favorable opinions from at least half of the respondents, highlighting their broad appeal. Other notable figures included George W. Bush with a 5% net favorability, Taylor Swift at 3%, while Donald Trump and Joe Biden recorded negative ratings of -18% and -19%, respectively. In stark contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin landed at the opposite end of the spectrum with a -65 net favorability.
Factors Behind Parton's Overwhelming Popularity
Parton's nearly seven-decade career in music and acting, including roles in acclaimed films like 9 to 5, has undoubtedly contributed to her widespread recognition. However, experts suggest her apolitical public relations strategy plays a crucial role in her high favorability. In a 2017 interview cited by the Hill, Parton stated, "Everybody I don't do politics. I've got as many Republican fans as Democrats, and I don't want to make any of them mad at me, so I don't play politics." This neutral stance has helped her maintain a positive image across political divides.
Additionally, Parton's extensive philanthropic efforts have garnered admiration nationwide. Her Dollywood Foundation's Imagination Library has donated over 270 million books to children under five across the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Australia. She also contributed $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee, aiding research that led to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, and provided more than $12 million to families affected by 2016 Tennessee wildfires. Recognized with the prestigious Carnegie medal of philanthropy in 2022 and named one of Time's most influential philanthropists in 2025, Parton's generosity is well-documented. "I just give from my heart," she said upon accepting the Carnegie medal. "I just see a need, and if I can fill it, then I will."
Broader Implications and Cultural Impact
This poll underscores the enduring influence of cultural figures who transcend political boundaries, with Parton's favorability reflecting a public appreciation for authenticity and humanitarian work. As global tensions persist, her example highlights how non-political personas can foster unity and positive perception. The results also offer insights into American public opinion, showing a preference for figures associated with charitable deeds over purely political achievements.
