Residents have been urged to avoid the area in Greenwich after a fire broke out on a rooftop garden early Tuesday morning, with around 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines responding to the blaze. The fire started at approximately 5:03am at a mixed-use building on Laban Walk, where a decking area in a rooftop garden was alight. No injuries have been reported.
Firefighters bring blaze under control within an hour
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) received 25 calls about the fire. Crews from Deptford, Greenwich, New Cross, East Greenwich, and surrounding fire stations rushed to the scene. One of the Brigade's 64-metre turntable ladders was deployed to tackle the flames from height, also providing the Incident Commander with an aerial view to help develop tactics. The fire was brought under control by 5:57am, less than an hour after the first call.
Residents advised to avoid area as cordons remain
Station Commander Jeremy Davies, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters worked incredibly hard to bring the incident under control as quickly as possible and ensure residents were safe. One of the Brigade's 64-metre turntable ladders was deployed to tackle flames from height, and also provide the Incident Commander with an aerial view to help develop tactics to bring the fire under control." He added: "Cordons remain in place while crews are on scene, so we encourage people to continue to avoid the area this morning."
Cause under investigation
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the London Fire Brigade. No further details have been released at this time.
