Supply Teacher Zak Chelli Stuns Boxing World with Upset Win Over David Morrell
Supply Teacher Zak Chelli Shocks Boxing World with Upset Win

Boxing is built on remarkable stories that change lives overnight. Zak Chelli, a 28-year-old secondary school supply teacher from Fulham, experienced his own Rocky moment two weeks ago in Manchester with a performance that could transform his future. On just two weeks' notice, Chelli stepped in to replace Callum Smith and faced Cuban fighter David Morrell, a former world title challenger and one of the best in the light-heavyweight division.

The Upset of the Year

Morrell, the heavy favourite, was rocked in the ninth round by Chelli, who sensed victory. In the tenth, Chelli unleashed thunderous hooks that left Morrell 'sleeping standing up', prompting the referee to stop the contest. It ranks as one of boxing's biggest upsets in recent years. Morrell's only previous loss was to David Benavidez, a top elite fighter. Chelli, who has won English, British, and Commonwealth titles, now eyes a world title shot.

From Classroom to Ring

'I will go to any school that needs me for the day,' Chelli told Metro. 'I'll teach any subject from maths to music, history, even drama.' He draws parallels between teaching and boxing: 'You listen to your trainer, the same way you listen to your teacher. If you follow correctly, practice, and work hard, you will do well.' Chelli also works with Time Out Boxing, teaching the sport to children to encourage positive change. 'They told me don't come back if you lose. They want to see their teacher do something special.'

The Financial Struggles

Chelli dedicated his life to boxing, a sport that often doesn't reward fighters fairly. 'Since my fight in Barnsley in August 2024, I haven't been paid by boxing. Two years with no payment, but I trained every day. My dad made me. I was still working, making no money from the sport. Last year I won the English light-heavyweight title and paid for it myself. But it put me in position for these opportunities.' After defeating Morrell, Chelli targets Callum Smith, who holds the interim WBO light-heavyweight title. 'I want Callum Smith now. I believe I have a very good shot at beating him. I sparred with him and got the better of him. I'm ready to shock the world again.'

Chelli hopes sponsorship opportunities will allow him to leave teaching and focus on boxing, though he plans to continue with Time Out Boxing. 'I need to prove what happened against Morrell wasn't a fluke. I need to show Zak Chelli is the real deal.'
