King Charles and Camilla emerge from Tardis at Games opening

King Charles and Queen Camilla made a dramatic entrance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, emerging from the Tardis at the Hydro arena. The 11-day sporting event features more than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories competing across 10 sports and six Para sports.

Doctor Who-themed opening

The ceremony began with a clip of Doctor Who's famous telephone box traveling around Scotland, piloted by cycling star Sir Chris Hoy and actor Greg McHugh. The Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, appeared confused by their efforts. The Tardis visited several Scottish landmarks before reaching Balmoral Castle and materializing inside the Hydro arena on an onstage garden. Charles and Camilla then emerged, walking down a ramp to the royal box.

King's role as Head of the Commonwealth

Charles will formally open the games in his capacity as Head of the Commonwealth, the ceremonial leader of the 56-nation association. Earlier, he attended a reception with baton bearers representing Commonwealth regions. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his wife Marie-France Van Heel, Scottish First Minister John Swinney, and the Duke of Edinburgh also attended.

Pre-show entertainment

During the pre-show, unicorn mascot Finnie entertained the crowd, and Scottish wrestler Grado appeared in a teacake costume. The ceremony also featured a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who famously participated in the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony by appearing to skydive into the stadium with James Bond actor Daniel Craig. Her stunt double wore a dress with sown-in Victorian-style bloomers and a large zip for the parachute. The late Queen also appeared in a comedy sketch with Paddington Bear for her Platinum Jubilee, revealing she kept marmalade sandwiches in her handbag.

Significance of the Games

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games marks a major sporting event for Scotland, with athletes from across the Commonwealth competing. The opening ceremony's Doctor Who theme highlighted Scottish cultural icons, blending tradition with modern entertainment.
