Manchester United have held new talks to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, whose representatives have initiated contact to revive a potential move to Old Trafford this summer. The Cameroon international, valued at £100 million by Brighton last year, remains keen on joining United despite a dip in form last season.
United's midfield rebuild continues
United have already signed two midfielders as part of their rebuild: Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. However, manager Michael Carrick is eager to add a third option as the club returns to Champions League competition this season. A move for Atalanta's Ederson was called off earlier this month.
Reports in Italy indicate that United have agreed personal terms with AS Roma star Manu Kone, with the Serie A side seeking a fee of around £52 million. Other targets include Bournemouth's Alex Scott, as well as Sander Berge and Tyler Adams.
Baleba remains an option
Baleba was a target for United last summer, but a move was shelved due to Brighton's £100 million valuation. His form declined last season, and it is unclear how that has affected the Seagulls' asking price. Fresh talks have now taken place, instigated by Baleba's representatives who are sounding out United's interest. Baleba agreed personal terms with the club last summer and remains eager to make the move.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano told his YouTube channel: "Those close to the player have been in contact again with Manchester United to suggest the possibility to return for Baleba. So it's from Baleba's side that they are trying to understand if United can return for the boy or not. After the Ederson deal off, and all the other developments, from Baleba's side, they want to understand if there is a chance to reopen conversations and negotiations with United."
Decision time for United
United must now decide whether to step up their interest in Baleba or focus on other targets. Romano added: "We know United are looking for a third midfielder, they want to make something happen for another defensive midfielder. We need to understand now if there is going to be a possibility for Baleba – or any other option, because United are checking on the market – which possibilities can become concrete this summer. Baleba is a name that was already high on the recruitment team's list one year ago. The player is super keen about United, now it depends on the club [and] whether they want to proceed or not."
