An Austrian man who admitted plotting an attack on Taylor Swift's concert in Vienna nearly two years ago expressed remorse in court before the verdict was announced. The defendant, identified only as Beran A under Austrian privacy laws, faces charges including terrorist offenses and membership of a terrorist organization.
Details of the Plot
Beran A, 21, allegedly planned to target fans outside the Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. The plot was thwarted, but Austrian authorities canceled Swift's three performances in August 2024 as a precaution. Tens of thousands of fans had traveled to Vienna for her record-breaking Eras tour.
Guilty Plea and Potential Sentence
Beran A pleaded guilty to charges related to the concert plot on the first day of his trial in April. He could face up to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors allege he networked with other Islamic State members, discussed buying weapons and making bombs, attempted to illegally purchase weapons before the concert, and swore allegiance to the group.
Co-defendants and Other Charges
Beran A is on trial alongside Arda K., whose full name has also not been released. Along with a third man in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia, they allegedly planned simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024 in the name of IS. Beran A pleaded not guilty to charges related to that plot.
Court Proceedings
In closing arguments at the state court in Wiener Neustadt, prosecutors called for conviction. Beran A's defense lawyer, Anna Mair, argued he was "not an ideological mastermind." In his final statement before the court adjourned to consider a verdict, Beran A said: "I would just like to say that I am sorry."
