Grammy-nominated opera singer Jubilant Sykes suffered at least 78 stab wounds in a brutal attack allegedly carried out by his own son, newly released autopsy findings have revealed. The 71-year-old baritone died at his home in Santa Monica, California, on December 8, 2025. His death was ruled a homicide, and his son, 32-year-old Micah Sykes, was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder.
Autopsy reveals extent of injuries
According to an autopsy report obtained by Us Weekly, Sykes sustained at least 73 separate wounds, including 68 sharp-force injuries and five blunt-force injuries. The Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner determined that two weapons were used: a large curved knife with a nine-inch blade and a 10-pound dumbbell, both recovered from the property. Toxicology tests found no evidence of prescription medication or illicit drugs in Sykes's system.
Witness account of the attack
The report includes an account from Sykes's wife, Cecelia, who witnessed the attack. She was showering when she heard her husband shouting for her to call 911. When she came downstairs, investigators say she found Micah allegedly standing over his father and repeatedly attacking him with a sharp-edged weapon. Emergency services responded shortly after 9:20 pm, but Sykes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Suspect's mental health history
During a court hearing in February, Micah interrupted prosecutors as they argued he should remain behind bars, insisting: 'I don’t see my mother here… This person’s not telling the truth whatsoever.' A judge ordered him held without bail pending trial. Prosecutors told the court that Cecelia had witnessed the fatal attack and was protected by a no-contact order. They also stated that Micah had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was believed to have been either under-medicated or not taking his prescribed medication at the time. Court proceedings have not determined whether his mental health affected his criminal responsibility.
Previous allegations and neighbor reports
In the months following the killing, reports resurfaced of a restraining order filed in 2017 alleging Micah had become fixated on a woman, repeatedly contacted her against her wishes, and attempted to force entry into a home. The filing also alleged he had displayed violent behavior toward family members. Neighbors told TMZ they had seen Micah wandering the area in the months before the killing, appearing distressed and shouting incoherently. Despite these struggles, friends said Jubilant remained hopeful about his son's future, recently telling others he believed Micah was 'doing really well.'

Sykes was regarded as one of America's leading baritones, earning a Grammy nomination for his performance on Leonard Bernstein's Mass in 2009. Over a career spanning decades, he performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, and London's Barbican Centre. He also collaborated with artists such as Julie Andrews, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, and Brian Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Cecelia, and their three sons. Micah Sykes has been charged with murder; the case remains ongoing, and he has not entered a plea.
