The Met Office has issued a series of flood warnings as a new bout of wet and windy weather sweeps across parts of the United Kingdom. Forecasters are warning of further potentially disruptive conditions from next week, with a deepening area of low pressure set to bring heavy rain and strong winds.
Flood Warnings and Weekend Forecast
As of Saturday, 6 December 2025, a total of thirty-six flood warnings are in force across Great Britain. The Environment Agency has issued twenty-two warnings for England, with a further eight from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and six from Natural Resources Wales.
The areas most at risk from heavy downpours include South Wales, southwest England, and Cumbria. The Met Office stated that bands of showers, some heavy with a chance of thunder, will be most persistent in these regions. In contrast, parts of Northern Ireland, northeast England, and southeast Scotland are more likely to stay dry.
Further Disruption Expected Next Week
The unsettled spell is forecast to continue, with rain moving across the country in a north-easterly direction from Sunday. While this is expected to clear across much of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland by the end of the day, a more significant system is predicted for the start of the new week.
Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, Steven Keates, warned: "A deepening area of low pressure will approach the UK from the South West later on Monday, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds, which are likely to affect the UK between late Monday and early Wednesday."
He added that the exact track of the low-pressure system remains uncertain, making it difficult to pinpoint the worst-affected areas. Weather warnings are likely to be issued over the weekend as details become clearer.
Travel Impact and Longer-Term Outlook
The additional rainfall poses a clear risk of localised flooding and travel disruption. The public is advised to check local forecasts and travel information before setting out.
Looking ahead, the Met Office indicated that the rest of December is expected to remain unsettled, with further periods of low pressure predicted. However, it is currently too early to provide an accurate forecast for the Christmas period.
Residents in affected regions are urged to stay informed via official Met Office updates and to heed any flood warnings issued by the relevant environmental agencies.
