A new exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, timed to the upcoming World Cup, offers fans a rare chance to see iconic sports trophies, rings, and medals up close. Titled "For the Win," the display spans nearly 150 years of US sports history, featuring items from the 1877 NYPD Medal of Valor to WNBA star Breanna Stewart's 2024 championship ring.
Exhibition Highlights
The exhibition includes Jesse Owens's 1936 Olympic gold medal, John McEnroe's 1983 Wimbledon trophy, and a pearl necklace worn by Joc Pederson during the 2021 World Series. Victory photography and other talismans round out the show, housed in the museum's gems and minerals space to emphasize craftsmanship.
Curatorial Insights
Rich Kleiman, a senior adviser and longtime agent to Kevin Durant, helped select the pieces. He notes that athletes often hesitate to display their achievements while still competing, but understand the emotional value. Vikki Tobak, co-curator, says the exhibition highlights how sports symbols represent human excellence.
Some items, like the Heisman Trophy, are rarely loaned, while others, like the Stanley Cup, are passed around but guarded. The World Cup trophy is on tour and not included. The New York Liberty's 2024 WNBA trophy was displayed in the locker room before joining the exhibition.
Interactive Elements
The museum will also host watch parties and play-based activities for all ages. The exhibition space is kept dark, with artifacts lit individually to create an aura. Some trophies still bear players' fingerprints, adding a human touch.
"For the Win: Objects of Sports Excellence" is now on show at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
