Raphinha, deployed as a makeshift No 9, scored twice, while Lamine Yamal added two outstanding goals of his own, and Anthony Gordon impressed again with his link-up play. The result kept Barcelona level on points with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, both with perfect records after three games.
Álvarez saga dominates headlines
Despite the win, Barcelona's need for a centre-forward is clear after the departures of Ferran Torres, Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford this summer. After the break, a Florian Lejeune own goal from Gordon's cross made it 3-1. Gordon, the most expensive outlay at the Camp Nou this summer, provided the cross and a great deal more from the left wing. His backheel set up Raphinha's second and Barça's fourth, making it three assists in three games.
Lamine Yamal's second, another Messi-esque finish from the edge of the box, put the result beyond doubt. Flick had insisted the 19-year-old was reaching his “top level” in training, and it was hard to argue.
Transfer deadline day looms
With the transfer deadline approaching, all eyes are on the exit door at Atlético's training ground. Arsenal appear to be Álvarez's only route out, with Atlético stating: “There is zero consideration of an Álvarez transfer to Barcelona.”
Elsewhere, Trent Alexander-Arnold impressed in Real Madrid's 4-0 win over Málaga, setting up Kylian Mbappé's goal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored for the third game in a row as Deportivo beat Valencia 3-1, their first top-flight victory since 2018.
