Sara Cox Steps into Eurovision Role After Scott Mills' BBC Exit
The BBC has confirmed Sara Cox as the new commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest, replacing Scott Mills, who was recently dismissed from BBC Radio 2. This change comes amid allegations regarding Mills' personal conduct, which reportedly involve a historic relationship from over a decade ago.
Allegations and Dismissal Details
Scott Mills, 53, a long-standing BBC employee, was let go following complaints related to a historic police investigation into serious sexual offences against a minor. The BBC stated, 'While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.' Mills had been a key figure in Eurovision coverage since 2011, commentating on semi-finals alongside Rylan Clark and broadcasting live from host cities.
Eurovision Coverage Shake-up
With the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest scheduled for Vienna in May, Sara Cox will now join Rylan Clark in covering the event. Cox, who has hosted BBC Radio 2's teatime show for seven years, previously commentated on the semi-finals live on Radio 2 last year. This marks her first time commentating the contest on television, adding a fresh dynamic to the BBC's broadcast team.
Impact on BBC Programming
Mills' departure not only affects Eurovision but also his role on BBC Radio 2, where he recently took over the Breakfast Show from Zoe Ball. Just last month, he announced the UK entry for Eurovision on his show, highlighting his deep involvement. In a past interview, Mills expressed his passion for Eurovision, calling it 'our World Cup' and emphasizing its unifying appeal.
The semi-finals for the 2026 contest are set for May 12 and 14, with the final on May 16. This transition underscores the BBC's commitment to maintaining high standards in its broadcasting amidst personnel changes.
