Manchester United have missed out on another summer target as Crysencio Summerville is set to join Al-Hilal after the Saudi club agreed a huge fee with West Ham United. The Athletic reports that a deal worth €80 million (£68 million) has been agreed, with a medical scheduled and a long-term contract waiting for the winger.
Summerville's Impressive Campaign
Summerville enjoyed an impressive campaign with the Hammers despite their relegation to the Championship last season. He also starred for the Netherlands at the World Cup before their premature exit at the round of 32 stage. The winger scored twice and provided two assists for Ronald Koeman's side before their defeat on penalties to Morocco.
United's Pursuit and Alternatives
United identified Summerville as their top target to strengthen the left side of their attack. Arsenal also reportedly explored a move, while Roma saw an opening offer rejected this month. United approached West Ham in June, with the Hammers demanding £50 million at that stage. However, interest from Saudi Arabia changed the situation.
United will now have to look elsewhere for left wing options. There is a possibility that Marcus Rashford could be reintegrated next season. Patrick Dorgu is also regarded as an option on the left wing, having impressed in that more advanced role last season. The club have also announced the signing of 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson, who will be handed a similar path to the first team that Ayden Heaven followed after his arrival from Arsenal 18 months ago.
United's Midfield Rebuild
United's focus so far this summer has been on rebuilding their midfield. The club were priced out of moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, who joined Manchester City and Tottenham respectively. However, they moved quickly to sign Andrey Santos for £50 million, with Youri Tielemans following him through the door for £35 million days later.
