A depraved thug has been sentenced to prison for a vicious attack on a Tube passenger, whom he beat unconscious with a wooden plank before assaulting two police officers in a frenzied robbery near Earl's Court station. Jody Cole, 44, of Nunhead Lane in Southwark, received a sentence of three years and four months at Inner London Crown Court after pleading guilty to robbery and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker.
Brutal Attack Near Earl's Court Station
The incident occurred on December 2, 2022, at approximately 11:10 pm, as the victim, a man in his 50s, was approaching Earl's Court station from Warwick Road. Cole cycled up to the unsuspecting victim, dismounted from behind, and launched a sudden assault, repeatedly striking him with a wooden plank. The attack left the victim with a broken nose and multiple head cuts, rendering him unconscious.
Robbery and Escape Attempt
While the victim lay unconscious, Cole rummaged through his pockets and stole his wallet, which contained bank cards and a driving licence. Alerted by onlookers, two Metropolitan Police officers arrived at the scene, but Cole attempted to flee. In the middle of the road, he punched and kicked both officers, managing to escape after a car ran over one officer's foot.
Officers found the victim bleeding profusely from the head, and he was rushed to hospital for urgent medical treatment. Later that evening, around 11:40 pm, Cole attempted to use the stolen bank cards at a nearby supermarket on the same road where the robbery had occurred just half an hour earlier.
Investigation and Arrest
Scotland Yard circulated an image of Cole across UK police forces in an urgent effort to locate him. A British Transport Police officer, who had previously interacted with Cole, recognised him, leading to his arrest. The swift identification and apprehension highlighted the effectiveness of inter-force cooperation in tackling violent crime.
Police Response and Sentencing
BTP Detective Constable Richard Rowe commented on the case, stating, "I'm very pleased with the outcome. Cole is a depraved individual who brutally assaulted his victim in an unprovoked attack, in full view of other commuters and the public." He also commended the Metropolitan Police officers for putting themselves in harm's way to protect the victim and detain Cole.
Rowe added, "I hope this sentence provides the victims with a sense of closure and underscores our commitment to the travelling public that there is absolutely no place for behaviour like this on the railway network." The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for violent offences and the dedication of law enforcement to ensuring public safety.
