Sutton United 0-2 Boreham Wood: Winless Run Hits Five

Sutton United were beaten 2-0 at home by National League leaders Boreham Wood on Friday night, extending their winless run to five games. The defeat leaves the U's in mid-table, while Boreham Wood maintain their remarkable unbeaten start to the season.

Early Chances and Defensive Resilience

Boreham Wood arrived at Sutton having won ten and drawn two of their opening twelve league matches, still undefeated. Sutton, by contrast, came into the fixture without a win in four games, having slipped to mid-table after a promising start to the campaign.

The hosts nearly took a shock lead within two minutes when Boreham Wood's defence was caught playing out from the back. The visitors' goalkeeper Ted Curd was forced to clear the ball as it rolled towards the line, preventing an embarrassing early error.

Boreham Wood's first meaningful chance arrived in the 20th minute. A long pass from defence found Lewis Richardson, whose shot from the edge of the box forced Sutton goalkeeper Spike Brits into a low save to his right. With five minutes until halftime, Bobby Amartey produced a heroic block, throwing himself at a powerful effort from the visitors to deny the opener, earning applause from the home supporters.

Second-Half Changes and the Breakthrough

Sutton kept the league leaders at arm's length for much of the first half and went into the break level at 0-0. Manager Chris Agutter made three changes at halftime, seemingly aiming to maintain intensity in the second period.

The deadlock was broken at the hour mark by Boreham Wood defender Chris Bush. A corner was sent to the back post, where the centre-back headed goalwards. There was momentary confusion over whether the ball had fully crossed the line, but the linesman awarded the goal.

Late Goal Seals Victory for the Leaders

Ten minutes from the end, Boreham Wood doubled their lead through Danny Cashman. The league leaders played through Sutton's defence to give Cashman a chance from six yards out, which he slotted home comfortably.

That proved enough to secure the victory for the away side, extending their lead at the top of the National League to ten points. Sutton, meanwhile, are now without a win in five games and face an away trip to second-placed Harrogate Town next weekend.
