With temperatures climbing above 30C in London this weekend, it's no wonder plenty of residents are looking to the city's many lidos, splash parks and outdoor swimming lakes for a way to cool off in the sunshine. One of London's most well-loved lidos could be the perfect choice, and it's easy to reach from all over the city.
It's clear to see why London Fields Lido in Hackney, East London, is so popular with locals. The 50-metre heated open-air pool is located at the north end of London Fields park, and has its own café serving coffees, soft drinks and sweet and savoury snacks.
The lido opened right back in 1931, but was sadly closed and left to the elements in the 1980s. Fortunately, a local campaign group rallied to bring the lido back into use, and it reopened following refurbishment in 2006.
The pool may be Olympic-sized, but can become rather crowded on hot summers' days, so it is advisable to book in advance. The lido is operated by Better, with the full timetable and slots available to book on the Better app or online.
Slots available include swim for all and swim for fitness, but bear in mind those booking swim for fitness slots will be expected to swim in the lanes - no splashing about with your mates.
With rainbow-hued changing huts dotting the poolside, London Fields Lido is a lovely place to sunbathe too. For an extended visit, you can book a 'sunbathing' slot, giving you 2 hours to relax at the poolside.
Prices
50-minute swimming slots cost £6.65 per adult for non-members, and are bookable online or on the Better app. Juniors (aged 3-15) start at £3.50 for off-peak sessions. Lockers are free to use, but do require a refundable £1 coin or token available at reception to operate.
Getting there
London Fields Lido is easily reachable on the Weaver Line from Liverpool Street station. Take the Weaver Line northbound towards Enfield, alighting at London Fields. From there, the lido is a 6-minute stroll through the park.
