Commuters in North London are facing a significant travel disruption next year, as Southgate Underground station will operate as exit-only for a ten-week period.
Essential Works and Travel Impact
Transport for London (TfL) has announced that from Monday 5th January 2026 until approximately mid-March 2026, passengers will not be able to enter Southgate station to board Piccadilly line services. The measure is due to urgent and essential maintenance work on one of the station's escalators.
During this period, travellers will only be able to exit the station. The remaining escalator will be set to operate in the upwards direction only. TfL states this proactive work is crucial to ensure future safety, improve reliability, and prevent longer, unplanned closures down the line.
Alternative Travel Options During the Closure
For those needing to access the Piccadilly line, TfL advises using nearby alternative stations. The closest stops on the line are Oakwood and Arnos Grove.
Passengers are encouraged to use local bus services to reach these stations. Key alternative bus routes include:
- 298 to Arnos Grove or Cockfosters
- 392 to Arnos Grove
- 299 to Cockfosters station
- 121 to Oakwood and Palmers Green stations
- W6 to Palmers Green
TfL recommends using the TfL Journey Planner or the TfL Go app for real-time alternative route information.
Official Statement and Apology
Richard Jones, TfL’s Director of Asset Performance Delivery, apologised for the impending disruption. He said: "We apologise in advance to customers using Southgate tube station for any disruption to their journeys. This essential maintenance work will ensure ongoing safety, provide better reliability and reduce the risk of longer unplanned closures."
This closure is part of a wider programme of upgrades across the network, following similar planned works for other lines including the Northern line's Bank branch and the Mildmay line.
