TfL Announces 2027 Launch of South London Superloop SL15 Bus Route

Transport for London has officially confirmed that a new Superloop bus route, designated SL15, will launch in 2027, connecting Clapham Junction and Eltham. This express service will primarily follow the A205 South Circular Road, offering a faster transit option for South London commuters.

Overwhelming Public Support for the Proposal

A public consultation conducted last October revealed strong backing for the SL15 route. Out of 1,381 survey respondents, an impressive 91 percent expressed support for the initiative, while 84 percent believed it would significantly reduce journey times. This positive feedback has paved the way for the route's implementation.

Route Details and Service Frequency

The SL15 will operate as a single-decker service with stops at eight key rail interchanges along its path. These include Clapham South, Tulse Hill, Forest Hill, and Catford/Catford Bridge, facilitating seamless transfers to other transport networks. Buses are scheduled to run every 12 minutes during Monday to Saturday daytime hours, and every 15 minutes on Sundays and at all other times.

While TfL has largely adhered to its initial proposal, minor adjustments have been made in the Clapham Junction area, specifically regarding bus departure points. Additionally, the existing SL6 route will be modified to include an extra stop at the Tulse Hill Gyratory, creating a direct connection to the new SL15.

Benefits and Connectivity Enhancements

Transport authorities anticipate that the SL15 will particularly benefit users of the busy P13, 160, and 185 bus routes, while providing quicker connections from Catford to Eltham. The new service is expected to create interchanges with 77 other bus routes, as well as with the Northern line, National Rail, and London Overground services, significantly improving overall network integration.

Rejected Proposals and Strategic Decisions

Despite the overall support, some survey respondents advocated for additional stops between Clapham South and West Dulwich, and between Lee and Eltham. TfL rejected these suggestions, emphasizing the importance of minimizing stops to maintain the route's express nature and reliability.

Furthermore, calls to extend the SL15 to Woolwich to connect with DLR and Elizabeth line services were also turned down. TfL explained that such an extension would make the route excessively long and less reliable. Instead, the authority prioritizes addressing 'missing links' in the network, such as establishing a bus route between Clapham Junction and Clapham Park.

The confirmation of the SL15 Superloop route marks a significant step in enhancing South London's public transport infrastructure, with its launch set for 2027 following thorough planning and community input.
