Transport for London (TfL) has announced its annual festive suspension of the Congestion Charge, granting drivers a cost-free window to enter the central zone over the Christmas period.
When is the Congestion Charge Suspended?
The daily charge, which is normally £15 for vehicles entering the zone between 7am and 6pm, will be paused from Thursday 25 December 2025. The suspension will last for eight days, with the fee resuming as normal on Friday 2 January 2026.
TfL stated that the break is designed to support residents, visitors, and workers during one of the capital's busiest times, making travel easier for shopping, festive events, and New Year celebrations. The decision also reflects the typically lower traffic volumes seen in central London between Christmas and New Year.
Which Other Road Charges Remain in Force?
While the Congestion Charge takes a holiday, TfL has emphasised that other key road user charges will continue as normal throughout the festive season.
The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will operate every single day, including Christmas Day. This charge, which covers most of Greater London, is unaffected by the Congestion Charge pause.
Furthermore, charges for using the Blackwall Tunnel and the new Silvertown Tunnel will also apply during the period, with the sole exception of Christmas Day itself.
Planning Your Festive Travel in London
TfL has advised all drivers to plan their journeys carefully, despite the Congestion Charge suspension. The transport body noted that scheduled engineering works, road closures, and diversions will be in effect, particularly around the Mayor of London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display, which will impact bus routes.
A TfL spokesperson said the aim is to “support Londoners through one of the busiest and most joyful times of the year while ensuring the road network continues to run safely and smoothly.”
The overarching message for motorists is to enjoy the temporary reprieve, but to check their routes in advance and remember that all standard charges will be firmly back in place from the start of January.
