Londoners and festive visitors are being urged to plan their journeys carefully, as significant travel disruption is scheduled across the capital's transport network over the 2025 Christmas and New Year period. A series of planned engineering works and service changes will affect Tube, Overground, Elizabeth line, and National Rail services from Christmas Eve through to January 2.
Major Station Closure and Key Dates
Liverpool Street Station will be completely shut from December 25 until January 1 for essential engineering upgrades. This major hub closure will create knock-on effects for several connecting Tube lines and national rail services throughout the festive break. Furthermore, a section of the Piccadilly line between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge will also be closed for upgrades on multiple days.
Daily Breakdown of Service Changes
The disruption begins on Christmas Eve, Wednesday 24 December, with reduced services starting early. Most Underground lines will see a reduced service after 8pm, while the Elizabeth line will have no services after 10.30pm. Last trains on London Overground lines, including the Lioness and Windrush lines, will depart between 9.15pm and 9.30pm.
As expected, Christmas Day, Thursday 25 December, will see no Transport for London (TfL) services running at all.
On Boxing Day, Friday 26 December, a reduced Tube service will begin from 7am. There will be no Night Tube, no Elizabeth line services, and no service on the Lioness, Suffragette, Weaver, and Liberty Overground lines. Specific closures include no District line to Kensington Olympia and no Piccadilly line between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge.
Disruption continues through the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 December, with the same core closures in place, including no Elizabeth line services between Liverpool Street and Stratford.
The pattern holds for Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 December, with no Night Tube and the persistent closure of the Piccadilly line section and the Elizabeth line segment into Stratford.
New Year's Eve and New Year's Day Arrangements
New Year's Eve, Wednesday 31 December, will see all-night Tube services, but with significant station management. Key central stations including Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, and Charing Cross will be closed or exit-only from early evening for safety. The Elizabeth line and DLR will also run all night, albeit with some route restrictions.
On New Year's Day, Thursday 1 January 2026, a reduced Sunday service will operate on the Underground. There will be no Waterloo & City line service, and the previously mentioned line closures remain in effect.
Finally, on Friday 2 January, travellers should note an additional closure on the Piccadilly line between King's Cross St Pancras and Cockfosters, alongside the ongoing works.
Passengers are strongly advised to check the latest TfL journey planner before travelling and to allow considerable extra time for their festive journeys across London.
