Transport for London has been compelled to implement significant reductions to Docklands Light Railway services following continued delays in reintroducing the new train fleet. The fresh rolling stock was withdrawn from operation last November after safety concerns emerged regarding the braking system's performance during wet weather conditions.
Service Reductions and Passenger Impact
Rail bosses have confirmed that services between Bank and Lewisham will operate with just two carriages instead of the usual three until Friday, February 20. This temporary measure has been implemented to reduce overall mileage and protect the existing train fleet while maintaining service reliability during peak periods.
Passengers have been warned that these reduced services could lead to increased crowding, particularly during rush hours. The DLR remains a crucial transport link between the City of London and Canary Wharf financial districts, despite the introduction of the Elizabeth line in 2022 providing additional capacity across east London.
New Train Timeline and Technical Issues
The first of the 54 new DLR trains was originally scheduled to enter service in April 2024, before being initially introduced in September 2025. The entire fleet was subsequently withdrawn after an incident where one of the new B23 services overshot a platform during wet weather, prompting investigations into the braking system.
Transport for London has not provided an exact date for when the new trains will resume service, although officials maintain that all new trains should be operational before the end of the current year. The organization continues to work with manufacturers to resolve the technical issues that have plagued the new fleet's introduction.
Weekend Closures and Additional Disruptions
In addition to the service reductions, TfL has announced a series of weekend DLR closures that will affect passengers throughout February. On Sunday, February 15, there will be no service between Tower Gateway and Shadwell stations.
A more extensive full weekend closure will be implemented between Bank and Tower Gateway through to Poplar and West India Quay on Saturday, February 21 and Sunday, February 22. These closures are part of ongoing maintenance work and infrastructure improvements across the DLR network.
The combination of reduced services and planned closures represents significant disruption for regular DLR users, particularly those relying on the network for commuting between key business districts. Transport for London advises passengers to check journey planners regularly and allow additional travel time during this period of reduced service capacity.
