Greater Anglia has officially launched contactless payment systems at Stansted Airport and 19 additional stations across Hertfordshire and Essex, marking a significant upgrade to rail ticketing infrastructure. This expansion, which commenced on Sunday, March 8, 2026, follows a delay from the original December 14, 2025, rollout due to software complications.
Modernizing Rail Travel with Contactless Technology
The introduction of contactless ticketing at these 20 locations is set to revolutionize the travel experience for passengers. This system allows users to pay for individual journeys seamlessly, with fares automatically calculated based on peak and off-peak travel times. The move is particularly impactful for Stansted Airport, where an estimated 16,000 passengers annually have faced fines due to the inability to tap out without a valid ticket after tapping in at stations like Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale.
Enhanced Convenience and Flexibility
Martin Beable, Managing Director of Greater Anglia, emphasized the benefits of this rollout. He stated, "We are pleased to confirm that pay-as-you-go contactless ticketing will be introduced at a further 20 stations from March 8, making travel across our network simpler and more flexible for customers." This extension is a key step in modernizing railway ticketing, aiming to improve efficiency and passenger satisfaction for those journeying into and out of London.
Considerations for Passengers
While contactless payment offers convenience, passengers with concessions or railcards should note that traditional tickets might still be more cost-effective in some cases. However, railcards can be added to Oyster cards, providing a hybrid option for savings. The rollout covers a diverse range of stations, including major hubs like Southend Victoria and Chelmsford, as well as smaller stops such as Harlow Mill and Roydon.
