TfL Acknowledges Station Upgrade Need But Lacks Action Plan
Transport for London (TfL) has publicly admitted that Shepherd's Bush Market Station on the Circle and Hammersmith and City lines clearly requires an upgrade, yet the authority has no immediate plans to carry out refurbishment works. This revelation comes as the Fix Uxbridge Road Committee, a local community group, expresses deep disappointment over TfL's failure to commit to meaningful improvements at the West London Underground station.
Community Campaign Intensifies Over Station Neglect
The Fix Uxbridge Road Committee, formed by residents advocating for enhancements along the historic Uxbridge Road, has been urging TfL to address the station's deteriorating condition as part of broader neighborhood upgrades. In a response reviewed by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), TfL stated that while it found no issues with elements like signage or the entrance, it recognized the station's need for an upgrade, noting that such decisions are determined by TfL's infrastructure projects team.
Noor, head of the committee, told the LDRS that the group is deeply disappointed by TfL's lack of commitment, despite numerous complaints from residents and elected representatives. For years, community members have raised concerns about poor station conditions and insufficient investment, with similar appeals made by London Assembly members yielding no success.
Accessibility and Investment Gaps Highlighted
A major point of contention is the station's lack of step-free access, which excludes disabled passengers, parents with prams, and elderly residents from using the facility. Noor emphasized that Uxbridge Road, one of West London's busiest high streets, deserves a station that reflects its community importance. The committee is calling for a full refit, including proper accessibility, refurbishment, and modern facilities, to ensure the station is fit for future use.
This call for action is underscored by the upcoming redevelopment of Shepherd's Bush Market itself, approved in late 2023. Developer Yoo Capital plans to introduce new stalls, council homes, a commercial building, and aesthetic works, raising concerns about gentrification and trader support. The disparity between market upgrades and station neglect has sparked criticism, as locals argue it makes little sense to invest in the surrounding area while the serving station remains in disrepair.
TfL's Stance and Community Engagement
In its response, TfL included notes from the station's Customer Service Manager, detailing actions such as addressing vegetation on the eastbound platform and considering the station's look and feel following a visit from the Head of the Hammersmith and City Line. However, the authority reiterated that station refurbishment is prioritized based on critical need and available resources.
A TfL spokesperson stated, We want to ensure that all of our stations are welcoming and in good repair. Our renewals programme focuses on stations that are most critically in need of investment to make best use of the resources we have available. We do not currently have plans to upgrade Shepherd's Bush Market Station but will continue to address any issues that require attention and will always engage with the community about our work.
The Fix Uxbridge Road Committee's efforts have already led to local council commitments for road upgrades, including the removal of defunct telephone boxes, following a petition with nearly 3,000 signatures presented to Hammersmith and Fulham Council. Despite this progress, the lack of TfL action on the station remains a significant hurdle for community advocates seeking comprehensive neighborhood improvements.
