The intricate project to replace the historic Victorian glass canopy at Fulham Broadway Tube station has been pushed back by a month, Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed.
Revised Timeline for a Complex Restoration
Originally scheduled to begin on December 3, 2025, preparatory work involving scaffolding installation will now commence on January 11, 2026. Hammersmith and Fulham Council confirmed the delay earlier this week. TfL has begun notifying local residents and businesses about the revised schedule.
Described by TfL as a 'delicate and complex' undertaking, the full refurbishment is expected to take 11 months to complete. The station will remain open for passengers throughout the works under current plans.
Preserving a Piece of London's Transport History
Fulham Broadway, a District line station, first opened in 1880 and retains its original wrought-iron trusses above the platforms. While the roof was partially upgraded in 2003, it has suffered from persistent leaks and vandalism in recent years.
Engineers estimate that approximately 45 of the 300-plus glass panels have been damaged since the start of 2020. The remaining panels are considered fragile and at risk of falling without warning. Temporary polycarbonate sheets have been in place as a stopgap measure.
Brighter Future for Commuters and Fans
The new roof will use heritage glazed glass, which is less prone to discolouration over time compared to modern alternatives. This upgrade promises to allow more natural daylight into the station, creating a brighter environment for daily commuters and football fans travelling to nearby Stamford Bridge.
The project will also replace the existing 'fragile' glazing bars, which have made routine maintenance difficult and hazardous for workers.
TfL spokesperson Andrew Hatch acknowledged the potential for disruption, stating: "We will do everything we can to minimise any disturbance to neighbours, including using acoustic barriers and using hand tools wherever feasible." The authority has already apologised in advance for any noise generated by the construction.
Following the preparatory phase, the installation of the new glazed panels is slated for next summer, with the engineering team aiming to finish the entire project by mid-November 2026.
