Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations will close for over three weeks from Sunday, July 26 until Monday, August 17, for major engineering works. The £20 million project involves replacing 1,800 metres of track and 16 sets of switches and crossings between the two stations, with additional work at Hungerford Bridge.
What engineering work is taking place?
The upgrade will replace track that has been in place since the early 1990s, aiming to improve reliability and reduce future delays. Work includes rebuilding platform ends at Charing Cross, improving track drainage at Waterloo East, and carrying out structural repairs on Hungerford Bridge, a 175-year-old crossing over the River Thames.
When will both stations shut?
No trains will call at Charing Cross or Waterloo East on: July 18-19, July 26 to August 16, August 22-23, and October 10-11. The main closure runs from July 26 to August 16.
How each route will be affected
Southeastern services will be diverted. The Hayes line will run to London Bridge or London Blackfriars. Grove Park line services will start and terminate at London Bridge. Bromley South line Victoria to Orpington trains will run every 30 minutes instead of 15. Maidstone East line trains will operate to London Victoria. Hastings line trains will run between London Bridge and Hastings. Paddock Wood line services will run between London Bridge and Dover Priory or Ramsgate. Bexleyheath line services continue with changes. Sidcup line trains will run to London Bridge. Woolwich line services continue with revised times.

Ticket holders can use the Jubilee line between London Bridge and Waterloo, Circle and District lines between Victoria, Blackfriars or Cannon Street and Embankment, Thameslink between Elephant & Castle, London Bridge and St Pancras, and Southern services. Most paper tickets accepted at TfL gates; electronic tickets not. Extra staff will manually check tickets at Waterloo and Charing Cross Tube stations. Refunds for Contactless or Oyster overcharges available via online claim form. Valid paper tickets accepted on bus routes 24, 26, 139, 148, 188, and 453.
