Radio System Fault Causes Major Train Disruptions in Southern England
Radio Fault Disrupts Trains in Southern England

A fault in the radio communication system caused severe disruptions to train services across southern England on Tuesday, with London Waterloo, one of the country's busiest railway stations, experiencing significant delays.

Radio Network Failure Triggers Chaos

The problem, which occurred towards the end of the morning rush hour, prevented drivers from communicating with signallers. This affected the Wessex route, which connects London with the south and south-west of England. Although the fault has been resolved, disruptions are expected to persist until the end of the day.

Impact on Services

Numerous services have been cancelled or delayed by up to 90 minutes. South Western Railway (SWR) has been the most affected operator, with trains struggling to return to normal schedules. Other operators, including Southern, CrossCountry, Gatwick Express, Great Western Railway, London Overground, and Thameslink, also reported delays or cancellations.

By 11 am, the National Rail website confirmed that the technical issue had been fixed, but warned that some services may still face delays of up to 90 minutes or cancellations while the network recovers. Major disruption is expected throughout the day.

Operator Warnings and Advice

SWR stated that services across its entire network may be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes, or revised for the rest of the day, with major disruption reported on routes as far west as Exeter. Southern advised that trains on its Haywards Heath route would be running late or terminating at Gatwick until at least 1 pm.

Passengers have been informed that they can use their tickets on alternative routes or operators at no extra cost. A Network Rail spokesperson apologized for the disruption and assured that staff have worked to resolve the fault, with services now returning to normal.

Travelers are advised to allow extra time for journeys and check before traveling throughout the day.
