Major Operation Targets Dangerous Modified E-Bikes
A significant enforcement operation in West London has resulted in the seizure of multiple illegal electric bikes, including one dangerously modified to reach speeds of up to 60mph. The Metropolitan Police joined forces with Hounslow Council for this targeted crackdown, which took place over two days last week.
Vehicles Seized in High-Footfall Areas
The joint operation led to seven illegal e-bikes and three e-scooters being confiscated from public roads. One of the most alarming discoveries was an e-bike rigged to achieve speeds exceeding 60mph – more than four times the legal limit for such vehicles on UK roads. Several other bikes were found fitted with unregulated, high-powered motors, creating serious safety risks for both riders and pedestrians.
Authorities intentionally focused their efforts on Hounslow High Street and Chiswick High Road, areas known for high pedestrian footfall and as popular delivery hotspots. This strategic targeting came in response to a sharp increase in illegal e-bikes being ridden at high speeds through London's town centres and on pavements.
Council and Police Issue Safety Warnings
Councillor Katherine Dunne, Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport at Hounslow Council, emphasised the dangers these vehicles pose. "Illegal e-bikes put lives at risk," she stated. "These operations show how closely the council and the police are working together to keep people safe. We urge all riders to make sure their e-bikes meet legal standards and are used responsibly on our roads."
Cllr Dunne also expressed support for a London Councils campaign calling for urgent government action, noting that "councils cannot tackle this alone." In response to the growing problem, Hounslow Council plans to launch an awareness campaign next month to help residents and riders identify legal e-bikes and understand the risks associated with illegal modifications. The council will also collaborate with major food delivery companies to address the issue.
PC Mustafa Jameel of the Metropolitan Police confirmed the operation's success, stating: "Our joint operations with Hounslow Council last week resulted in several illegal e-bikes being taken off the streets. Many were fitted with unsafe or high-powered motors. These e-bikes break the law and endanger riders and the wider public. We will continue these joint enforcement efforts across the borough."
