Jamie Carragher has cast doubt on Arsenal's pursuit of Vinicius Junior, suggesting the Brazilian forward is using the Gunners' interest as leverage to secure a lucrative new contract at Real Madrid. The former Liverpool defender's comments come amid reports that Arsenal are preparing a record-breaking offer for the 26-year-old.
Contract Stalemate at Real Madrid
Vinicius Junior has entered the final 12 months of his current deal at the Santiago Bernabeu, with renewal talks having collapsed following last year's Club World Cup. This situation has alerted Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta reportedly 'absolutely smitten' with the prospect of bringing the attacker to north London.
The newly crowned English champions are said to have approved a bid 'at all levels', with intentions to make Vinicius the highest-paid player in Premier League history. However, reports from Madrid indicate that the player has 'prioritised' resolving his future in the Spanish capital.
Mourinho's Influence and Vinicius's Optimism
New Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has made it clear he would be vehemently opposed to losing the Brazilian. In a further blow to Arsenal's hopes, Vinicius revealed positive conversations with Mourinho, telling Real Madrid TV: 'It has gone very well, getting to know the new coach and the new players, and training very hard. Mourinho wants me to be as I have always been: happy, cheerful and playing my football.'
Asked about pre-season objectives, Vinicius added: 'I think the goal is to get us match fit so we have fewer injuries during the season. That way we can rely on everyone throughout the campaign.'
Carragher's Verdict on Arsenal's Need
Speaking on the Football Ramble podcast, Carragher acknowledged that signing Vinicius would elevate Arsenal's squad, particularly for their Champions League ambitions. He said: 'Yeah, in terms of being that superstar. I think the Vinicius Junior thing is really interesting in that I do think you need something like that to win the Champions League.'
However, he questioned whether Arteta would be willing to compromise his tactical structure: 'But is Arteta almost giving up something that he loves in terms of these wingers just permanently running back and helping the full-back, being in this block on the edge of their box… saying, "I've actually got to roll the dice here… OK, I've got to lose a bit of that to gain a bit of that", and then there's still no guarantee.'
Slim Chances and Premier League's Attacking Void
Carragher expressed a desire to see Vinicius in the Premier League, citing a lack of top attacking talent in the division. He highlighted that at the 2026 World Cup semi-final stage, no Premier League attacker featured for the four best teams, aside from Morgan Rogers who was a late inclusion due to fitness concerns.
'I'd love to see it. I think we lack top players in the Premier League right now, I do,' Carragher said. 'For us to get somebody I think would be amazing. I just can't see it happening. He's surely doing it to get a new contract at Real Madrid.'

Carragher also backed Manchester City to reclaim the Premier League title, provided they retain Rodri. He noted City's close finish last season and the potential impact of a new manager, saying: 'If you're City, what's the point in selling Rodri? What's the point? Just get another year out of him and let him go for free. He's the best in his position. What's £40m for City?'
