Warhorse Studios has officially confirmed that it is developing a Lord of the Rings role-playing game, alongside a new Kingdom Come adventure. The announcement came in a surprisingly low-key manner via a brief social media post on X, leaving fans underwhelmed despite the exciting projects.
Confirmation of the Lord of the Rings RPG
Rumors had been circulating for months that Warhorse, the studio behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, was working on a game set in Middle-earth. When directly questioned earlier, the studio had only acknowledged that its next project was another RPG, without denying the Lord of the Rings connection. Now, the truth is out: Warhorse is indeed creating an open-world Middle-earth RPG. However, the studio has not specified the time period. It could be set during the Second Age, the era of Amazon's The Rings of Power, or even later ages after the events of The Lord of the Rings. This ambiguity leaves room for a fresh take on Tolkien's world.
Other Lord of the Rings Games in Development
Warhorse's project is not the only Lord of the Rings game in the works. Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the Tomb Raider reboot, is also rumored to be making a Lord of the Rings game, potentially in collaboration with Amazon. Additionally, speculation suggests that The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, a 2011 action game that was a commercial disappointment, might receive a remaster.
The New Kingdom Come Adventure
Warhorse's other project is a new Kingdom Come adventure. While many assume this is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3, the studio has only described it as a 'new Kingdom Come adventure,' leaving open the possibility of a spin-off or a game in a different genre. The previous two Kingdom Come titles were RPGs, but this new entry could deviate from that formula.
No Release Window or Fanfare
Neither project has a release window, and the announcement itself was notably bland. Warhorse posted a short message on X, saying, 'We're excited to tell you more when the time is right.' This lack of showmanship is not unique to Warhorse; other studios have made similarly understated announcements. For instance, Ubisoft revealed Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced with a single image before its showcase, and Sony announced a release date for its Wolverine PS5 exclusive via a brief social media post without a new trailer.
Despite the dull announcement, the projects themselves are highly anticipated. Fans will have to wait for more details as Warhorse continues development.
