Rooney Praises Chelsea Star After Liverpool Draw

Wayne Rooney has singled out Chelsea star Marc Cucurella for praise following the Blues' 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield. The Manchester United legend believes Chelsea were the superior side for most of the match, ending a run of six consecutive Premier League defeats.

Match Overview

Chelsea travelled to Anfield on Saturday desperate to halt their losing streak. Liverpool took an early lead through Ryan Gravenberch, who curled a superb strike past the Chelsea goalkeeper. However, Enzo Fernandez equalised before half-time with a cross-cum-shot that beat Liverpool's Giorgi Mamardashvili. Both teams had opportunities to snatch a winner in the second half, but the match ended 1-1.

Rooney's Analysis

Speaking on BBC Sport, Rooney said: 'I thought Liverpool actually started quite well, got the goal, and then from there Chelsea were the better team. They caused Liverpool big problems, especially Marc Cucurella running behind.' He also noted the unusual tension among Liverpool supporters: 'The crowd were obviously a bit edgy, which you very rarely get from Liverpool fans. You never like to see that, but it comes from not having the season they hoped for, and after spending a lot of money.'

Fan Reaction

Liverpool fans booed at full-time and also expressed displeasure when young talent Rio Ngumoha was substituted with around 30 minutes remaining. Manager Arne Slot explained the decision: 'He was having problems with his muscles and when I asked him he said he was not sure he could continue. I knew this would be the reaction because he is such a good player.' Slot added: 'That's probably got something to do with us not winning. It completely makes sense people are disappointed if Liverpool don't win.'

Slot's Assessment

Reflecting on the performance, Slot said: 'We started off really well and got a big chance from a set-piece which was close to making it 2-0. Unfortunately, like last week, we conceded a set piece. It was such a sloppy goal. The second half I saw a completely different intensity. We went close a few times. Like so many times this season, we hit the post and bar. We were not able to control their players. They played with a lot of midfielders today.'

League Implications

The draw leaves Chelsea potentially in the bottom half of the table by the weekend's end, while Liverpool remain fourth, moving closer to Champions League qualification. Liverpool face top-four rivals Aston Villa next, and Chelsea take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
