Arsenal favourite Per Mertesacker has confirmed he will step down from his position as the club's academy manager at the conclusion of the current season.
A Distinguished Arsenal Career Comes to a Close
The 41-year-old German, a cult figure during his playing days at the Emirates, has held the pivotal role since 2018, overseeing the development of young talent for eight years. Mertesacker originally joined Arsenal from Werder Bremen in 2011, captaining the side and winning three FA Cups before moving directly into academy management upon retiring.
In an official club statement, Arsenal highlighted Mertesacker's vision of creating 'Strong Young Gunners' and his focus on the philosophy that 'better people make better players'. The statement credited him with instilling core club values in youngsters who have progressed to the first team, moved to other clubs, or taken different paths with a solid foundation.
Mertesacker's Emotional Farewell and Future Plans
Explaining his difficult decision to leave, Mertesacker said: "Arsenal is and will always be a very special club to me. I am very thankful for the trust the club put in me when transitioning from a first-team player directly into the role as Head of Academy."
He added that the time had come for a new challenge, stating: "Now it is time for me to move on and explore something new and push myself even further." The former defender pledged to remain fully committed until his departure, focusing on nurturing young talent and ensuring a smooth handover.
Club Leadership Praises His Legacy
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's Chief Executive Officer, expressed support for Mertesacker's choice but admitted the club would be "incredibly sad to see him leave." He praised the former captain's deep understanding of what Arsenal represents and his inspirational leadership for coaches, staff, and players alike.
Garlick confirmed that the search for a successor is underway, noting: "We're happy that Per remains in role until the end of the season whilst we focus on our succession plan." He reaffirmed the club's ongoing commitment to its academy as a cornerstone for future trophy success.
Mertesacker's final day in his post will come after eight years of dedicated service, marking the end of a significant chapter in Arsenal's youth development structure.
