Chelsea Beat Tottenham to Relegate Spurs on Dramatic Night
Chelsea Beat Tottenham to Relegate Spurs

Enzo Fernández raced away in delight after punishing Tottenham with his first-half goal, as Chelsea secured a 2-1 victory that sent Spurs down to the Championship on the final day of the Premier League season.

First Half: Fernández Breaks the Deadlock

Calum McFarlane, Chelsea's interim manager, reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation, deploying Fernández on the left wing. It was the Argentine who opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a powerful strike from 25 yards. The ball wobbled and faded to the right of Antonin Kinsky, who appeared to pick it up late and was slow to react. Chelsea had earlier threatened when Cole Palmer forced a save from Kinsky, and the goal was a blow to Spurs, who had started brightly with Mathys Tel hitting the near post from a Pedro Porro cross.

Fernández's goal shifted momentum firmly in Chelsea's favor. He drifted inside, allowing Marc Cucurella to overlap, and after Porro was booked for a late tackle, Fernández curled a free-kick from a tight angle that beat Kinsky but struck the crossbar. Chelsea hunted for a second before the interval, with Kevin Danso making a crucial tackle on Liam Delap and Palmer dragging wide after errors by João Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Second Half: Spurs Fight Back but Fall Short

Spurs pushed forward after the restart, but lacked cutting edge. Tel crossed for Richarlison, who headed wide from in front of goal, and later directed a weak header from a Porro corner at goal. Before Roberto De Zerbi could make substitutions, Chelsea doubled their lead. A loose pass from Randal Kolo Muani to Palmer, combined with Bentancur being wrong-footed, allowed Chelsea to break quickly. Pedro Neto crossed deep, Fernández cushioned a pass back inside, and Andrey Santos finished first-time.

Trailing 2-0, Spurs faced the abyss, but as Chelsea's levels dropped due to their quick turnaround from the FA Cup final, Spurs rallied. Conor Gallagher, jeered on his return to Stamford Bridge, shot straight at Robert Sánchez. A flowing move led to Richarlison's goal in the 74th minute, with Pape Sarr providing an improvised back-heel assist. Spurs pushed for an equalizer, with James Maddison denied by Jorrel Hato and Micky van de Ven denied a penalty after being wrestled down by Cucurella before the ball was in play. Delap was booked for an apparent elbow on Djed Spence, and Maddison blasted a free-kick high, but Spurs could not find the net again.

Survival Battle Goes to the Final Day

The victory ensures Chelsea's Premier League survival, while Spurs must now beat Everton at home on Sunday to avoid relegation. Tottenham have the joint-worst home record in the division with Burnley, adding to the pressure on De Zerbi's side.
