Three Face Charges in Major Funeral Directors Investigation

Police Scotland has confirmed that three people have been charged in connection with an unprecedented investigation into the alleged mishandling of human ashes and funeral funds at a former undertakers firm. The probe, named Operation Koine, focuses on A Milne Independent Funeral Directors, which previously operated offices in Glasgow and Dumbarton.

Cross-Border Arrests and Charges

In a significant development on Wednesday, officers from the Operation Koine team, assisted by colleagues in North Wales, executed search warrants at an address in the Flint area of Wales. This led to the rearrest of a 58-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman. On the same day, a 58-year-old woman was rearrested in the Bishopbriggs area of East Dunbartonshire.

In an update released on Thursday, Police Scotland stated that all three individuals have now been formally charged. They will be reported to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) in due course.

Unprecedented Probe and Public Support

Detective Superintendent Robert Bowie, who is leading the investigation, addressed the public, stating: "I'd like to thank everyone who has come forward with information on this investigation and members of the public for their continued support." He emphasised that Operation Koine is an unprecedented investigation for Police Scotland and reassured the public that the dedicated team would continue to pursue all lines of enquiry.

The investigation was launched in April 2024 in response to serious allegations concerning missing ashes and funeral plan fraud. By September, the force had received complaints from more than 70 people.

Victim Support Scotland is working closely with police to explore a support package for those affected. A helpline is available on 0800 160 1985, and a webchat service can be accessed at victimsupport.scot.

DS Bowie added that a further drop-in clinic for information and support will be held on Friday 5 December for those who have already been in contact with police. Anyone with additional concerns is urged to call 101 or email Operationkoine@scotland.police.uk.
