In a decisive move that reshapes its future, Your Party has voted to adopt a collective leadership model, effectively sidestepping a potential internal battle between its prominent co-founders, Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana.
A Close Vote for a New Direction
The result was announced to delegates at the new movement's annual founding conference in Liverpool, where it was met with a significant cheer. Members voted in favour of the collective model over a single leadership structure by a margin of 51.6% to 48.4%.
This outcome directly addresses the factionalism that has marked the party's early days between its two figureheads. Had the single leadership model been chosen, a contest for the top position was widely anticipated.
Power to the People, Not Personalities
Many members at the conference expressed to Sky News that their preference stemmed from a desire to move away from personality-driven politics and internal squabbling. They advocated for a party led by its people rather than by personality icons.
The newly approved collective leadership model will see ordinary members, who are not Members of Parliament, elected to senior positions on a central executive committee. This body will be responsible for deciding party strategy and organisation.
Key Roles and MP Influence
Three key leadership roles—the Chair, Vice Chair, and Spokesperson—are set to be elected by February. However, MPs could still emerge as de-facto leaders, as they will be eligible to sit in the public office holder section of the executive committee.
These MP positions must be elected in a one-on-one vote, with an understanding that four such positions will be available.
A spokesperson for Your Party stated: This vote shows that we really are doing politics differently: from the bottom-up, not the top-down. They criticised the Westminster professional political class for being disconnected from ordinary people and pledged to offer a democratic, grassroots, and accountable alternative.
