Blair Urges Labour Policy Debate Before Leadership Choice, Criticises Burnham
Blair Urges Labour Policy Debate Before Leadership Choice

In a recent interview on the Today programme, former Prime Minister Tony Blair emphasised that the Labour Party must first determine its policy agenda before selecting a new leader. When asked about the choice between candidates Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting, Blair advised Labour members to insist on detailed policy proposals from all contenders, including assessments of the current government's successes and failures.

Blair's Call for Policy Clarity

Blair stated, "My advice is choose your direction first and make sure that before you have any leadership change, you make all the candidates set out in detail their policy, what the Government's got right, what it's got wrong, what we should do differently." He underscored the need for a coherent platform to avoid the pitfalls that plagued the party under previous leadership transitions.

Criticism of Burnham's Narrative

While expressing general admiration for Burnham, Blair took issue with the Greater Manchester mayor's recent speech claiming that government policies over the past four decades have consistently failed voters. Blair remarked, "I hope Andy wins Makerfield, I think he's a great guy, I want to see him in parliament. But you know, when he does this thing about 40 years of wasted … what, nothing good happened in that period of Thatcher with the business community, or New Labour? I don't think he really means that."

Lessons from Past Leadership Changes

Blair reflected on the transition from Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, noting that the party failed to adequately explain why Corbyn's agenda was misguided, beyond his electoral unpopularity. He stressed that future leaders must articulate a clear rationale for policy shifts to build a coherent vision for the party's future.
