Zelenskyy Seeks 50-Year US Security Guarantee, Gets 15 in Draft Peace Plan
Zelenskyy: US Security Guarantee for Ukraine Agreed at 15 Years

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has disclosed that a proposed peace framework to end the war with Russia includes US security guarantees for Ukraine lasting 15 years. This comes after he personally asked former US President Donald Trump for a commitment spanning up to half a century.

High-Stakes Diplomacy at Mar-a-Lago

The revelation followed a critical meeting between the two leaders at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Speaking to reporters via WhatsApp, Zelenskyy confirmed he had pushed for a 50-year security guarantee during the talks. The nature of these proposed guarantees remains unspecified, but the Ukrainian leader has long advocated for "article-5-like" protections, mirroring NATO's collective defence principle.

Progress and Sticking Points in Peace Talks

Both leaders indicated that the lengthy negotiations, aimed at halting the conflict that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, are advancing. Zelenskyy stated the security guarantees in the revised 20-point peace proposal are "100% agreed," while Trump offered a more cautious assessment, putting the figure at around 95%.

However, significant hurdles remain. Trump highlighted "one or two tough" unresolved issues, notably concerning territory. He expressed sympathy for Russia's reluctance to agree to a ceasefire, stating, "You have to understand the other side." A key point of contention is the future of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, largely controlled by Russian forces, with a proposal to turn it into a demilitarised zone still on the table.

What Happens Next?

The former US president suggested that it could become clear within weeks whether a path to ending the nearly four-year war is feasible. The diplomatic efforts continue as both sides navigate these complex and sensitive final issues.
