Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) and Summer Spellman are set to depart Coronation Street for Thailand, having endured a year of abuse from Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) and a murder accusation. Their exit, however, may cause financial turmoil for George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) and Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins).
Todd and Summer's ordeal
Theo subjected Todd to vicious physical attacks, gaslighting, coercive control, financial abuse, and sexual assault. Summer also suffered; her adoptive father Billy Mayhew died in a minibus fire because Theo was too jealous to save him. Summer grew suspicious of Theo and risked her life to prove his guilt.
On the night of Theo's murder, Todd was supposed to fly to Thailand, but Theo trapped him in a deadly game. Theo discovered Summer in the flat, threatening her with the line 'I guess Summer had to end some time.' Theo later died after falling from scaffolding, a death now revealed to be caused by Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien).
Murder accusation and arrest
Theo's ex-wife Danielle Silverton (Natalie Anderson) publicly accused Todd of murder for life insurance. Summer's diary, containing fantasies of holding a gun to Theo's head, made her look guilty. She was arrested but freed after Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) confirmed he saw her fleeing Theo that night. Tyrone had stayed silent to hide his role in Carl Webster's death.
Facing jail, Summer switched off her insulin pump, risking death. Tyrone eventually did the right thing, clearing her. With Sarah revealed as Theo's killer, Todd and Summer are in the clear.
Plans to leave
Todd decides to finally take his delayed trip to Thailand with Summer. However, Christina has been spending money recklessly and hiding it from George. Todd considers giving them Theo's life insurance money to ease their crisis.
In upcoming scenes, Todd and Summer announce their flights to Thailand. Christina tells George she expects Todd to share the insurance, but Todd's departure may leave them in financial trouble. Will Todd make a heartfelt gesture before leaving?
