Mexico's navy has launched an urgent search-and-rescue mission in the Caribbean Sea after two sailboats carrying vital humanitarian aid to Cuba vanished without a trace. The vessels, which departed from Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo last week, were scheduled to dock in Havana between March 24 and 25 but have not been heard from since their departure.
International Search Operation Underway
The Mexican navy confirmed on Thursday that it has activated comprehensive search protocols and established contact with maritime rescue coordination centers in Poland, France, Cuba, and the United States. Diplomatic representatives from the countries of origin of the nine crew members aboard the missing vessels have also been notified and are cooperating with the investigation.
Experienced Crew and Well-Equipped Vessels
According to statements from the "Nuestra America Convoy" organizers, both missing boats were crewed by experienced sailors and equipped with appropriate safety systems and signaling equipment. "We are cooperating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," a convoy spokesperson told Reuters.
Grassroots Aid Effort for Cuba
The missing vessels represent part of a broader grassroots humanitarian initiative aimed at delivering essential supplies to Cuba, which has been grappling with prolonged power outages and a deepening economic crisis following tightened U.S. embargo restrictions on oil and other critical goods. Volunteers in Mexico loaded the boats with rice, beans, baby formula, medicine, baby wipes, and other vital supplies destined for Cuban communities in need.
Separate Convoy Vessel Arrives Safely
While the search continues for the two missing sailboats, a separate vessel from the same humanitarian convoy successfully arrived in Havana on Tuesday, March 21. Activists in the Cuban capital documented the arrival of this earlier aid delivery, highlighting the ongoing efforts to support the island nation despite mounting challenges.
The Mexican navy's statement emphasized that there has been no communication from the missing boats and no confirmation of their arrival in Cuban waters. The international maritime community remains on alert as search efforts intensify across the Caribbean region.
