Teen dies in Benidorm after suspected vape oil reaction

A British teenager has died while on holiday in Benidorm after a suspected reaction to vape oil, his family has reported. Harry Whitton, an 18-year-old from Dundee, passed away in the popular Spanish resort while accompanied by his girlfriend.

Family's Account of the Incident

Harry's father, Chris Whitton, shared on Facebook that the family believes the teenager suffered a deadly reaction while out for lunch. Discussing the post-mortem results, Chris explained: 'His throat then constricted, causing breathing difficulties. He also vomited, and while struggling to breathe, aspirated it into his lungs.'

The family suspects the reaction was linked to his vape. Chris added: 'We think it was his vape; he had recently purchased a vape oil in Benidorm, and that is the only difference between what he was using and what his girlfriend was using.'

Warning About Vape Dangers

Chris continued: 'If one thing comes from the loss of our boy Harry, it must be highlighting the dangers of using vapes and oils. There are still far too many unknowns about these vape oils, and no long-term studies have been conducted on their effects.'

Harry's mother, Debbie Bell, told Metro that the family intends to have the vape oil tested for 'contained substances' once they return home to Scotland.

Tributes and Grief

In a Facebook tribute, Debbie said the family's 'hearts are shattered' and their world has been 'turned upside down.' She added: 'Our little drummer boy passed away while living his best life on holiday with the love of his life. We were all so proud of everything Harry achieved, and we were waiting to see how the next chapter would unfold. As a family, we are here in Spain doing everything we can to bring our boy home.'

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for repatriating Harry. The page states: 'We should be arranging his surprise 18th birthday, but instead we will be home arranging a funeral. It is all unimaginable and feels very unreal. We want to share how loved and special our boy truly was. Everything he did, he did with his cheeky character and pure heart and soul.'

Dundee FC, where Harry worked, described him as a 'familiar and friendly face' in the hospitality lounges at Dens Park. The club said he was 'highly valued by colleagues and warmly regarded by supporters.' A statement added: 'We were deeply saddened to learn of Harry Whitton's passing while on holiday in Spain. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him at this incredibly difficult time.'

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Benidorm and are in contact with local authorities.'
