Glasgow Drug Courier Ordered to Repay Thousands After High-Speed Chase
William Paterson, a 37-year-old personal trainer from Glasgow, has been ordered to repay £46,370 of illicit gains after being involved in a drug supply operation that saw nearly £1 million worth of cocaine dumped during a police pursuit. This ruling was made by the High Court in Edinburgh under the Proceeds of Crime Act, highlighting ongoing financial consequences for criminal activities.
Operation Windstriker and the Arrest
Paterson was apprehended in 2023 as part of Operation Windstriker, a police initiative targeting an organised crime group in western Scotland. Officers observed him collecting a black plastic box from another individual in the Springboig area of Glasgow and placing it into his Mercedes before driving away. During a subsequent high-speed chase, Paterson attempted to evade capture by driving directly at an unmarked police vehicle.
He was eventually stopped, and police recovered £6,370 in loose banknotes from his car. However, the black box was missing. Retracing his route, officers discovered the box on a residential street near Hogganfield Loch, Glasgow, containing nine kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value between £719,040 and £898,000.
Legal Proceedings and Confiscation Order
In 2024, Paterson pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of a class A drug, aggravated by connections to serious organised crime, and was sentenced to five years and four months in prison. The High Court in Edinburgh recently recorded the benefit of his criminal conduct as £205,000 and issued a confiscation order for £46,370.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) stated that this order can be revisited if additional assets belonging to Paterson are identified in the future, ensuring he repays the full amount. Prosecutor Sineidin Corrins emphasized that prosecution extends beyond conviction, with ongoing efforts to confiscate illegally obtained funds.
