Security footage has captured a man abandoning four young kittens in the after-hours book return slot of a public library in Adelaide, in what authorities say is a recurring problem.
Chilling Footage Captures the Act
The incident occurred at the Greenacres Library, where CCTV recorded a man depositing the animals into the external return box at around 10pm on 11 January. The four kittens, believed to be only about six weeks old, were not discovered until the following morning, 12 January, when a staff member opened the unit.
A Disturbing Pattern of Behaviour
Thankfully, the kittens were found to be unharmed. However, the RSPCA South Australia has revealed this is not an isolated event. This marks the third time that kittens have been callously dumped in the library's after-hours return slot, indicating a pattern of irresponsible behaviour targeting the same location.
The animal welfare charity is now urgently appealing to the public for assistance. They are asking anyone with information that could help identify the man seen in the security footage to come forward.
Public Appeal for Information
"Dumping defenseless animals is never acceptable," a spokesperson for RSPCA South Australia stated. "This method of abandonment is particularly concerning as it could have easily led to injury or worse for these vulnerable kittens. We need the community's help to find who is responsible and prevent this from happening again."
The RSPCA has emphasised that there are always better options for pet owners who can no longer care for their animals, including contacting rescue organisations directly.
