An East London property company and its two directors have been ordered to pay more than £20,000 after dumping waste, including a suitcase containing incriminating documents, in a nature reserve in Ilford.
RCGY Prop Ltd, along with directors Hasan Yaman and Ruhui Chowdhury, was caught fly-tipping at Aldborough Hall Nature Reserve. Redbridge Council received a report from a member of the public, and environmental officers discovered piles of construction rubbish, bags of soil, mattresses, rugs, a large sofa, and carpet underlay at the site.
Among the waste, officers found a suitcase containing a series of letters and old tenancy documents. After several days of examination, the documents linked the waste directly to a property in Fulham.
Court proceedings and fines
The business and its two directors were taken to court after failing to demonstrate how rubbish from the Fulham property had been disposed of safely. Yaman and Chowdhury pleaded guilty to two waste offences at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on August 4.
The pair were each ordered to pay £4,666 in fines and surcharges, while their company was required to pay £12,475, bringing the total financial penalty to more than £20,000.
Council response and ongoing investigations
Redbridge Councillor Sunny Brar condemned the incident, stating: “Dumping waste in one of our treasured nature reserves is a disgraceful act that damages the environment, harms wildlife, and undermines the efforts of our local communities who take pride in our borough.”
Brar added: “This prosecution should serve as a warning that Redbridge does not tolerate fly-tipping and will continue to take robust action and use the full weight of the law against those who damage our environment and blight our borough.”
The council is continuing to investigate further instances of fly-tipping in Aldborough Hall Nature Reserve.
