Large parts of western Europe are experiencing another extreme heatwave this summer, with temperatures reaching the high 30s across Spain and France, according to reports. High temperatures up to mid-30s are also expected across the south and south-west of England today and tomorrow, with a public health alert in place. A high temperature warning has been issued for a dozen counties in the Republic of Ireland.
Heatwave Expected to Continue into Next Week
The heatwave is expected to continue into next week, with authorities advising residents to look after vulnerable family and friends, avoid prolonged heat exposure, and be vigilant for wildfires. The extreme weather is testing the continent’s infrastructure, including a temporary shutdown of a reactor at the Golfech nuclear power plant near Toulouse due to the ongoing heatwave.
Residents are urged to stay cool, drink plenty of fresh water, and check on elderly or isolated neighbours. The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow heat-health alert for parts of England, warning of potential health impacts.
Wildfire Risk and Infrastructure Strain
Fire services across southern Europe are on high alert as dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires. In France, several departments have been placed on orange alert, the second-highest level. The heatwave has also led to increased energy demand and strain on power grids.
