John Douglas, the guitarist and singer of the Scottish indie rock band Trashcan Sinatras, has died at the age of 63 after a brief illness. His death was announced by his bandmates on social media on Tuesday, just four days after the group released their first new album in ten years, Ever the Optimist.
Bandmates pay tribute to 'dear friend and brother'
In a statement posted on Instagram, fellow band members Francis Reader, Paul Livingston, Stephen Douglas, and Davy Hughes wrote: 'We are devastated to inform all of you that we have lost our dear friend and brother John after a brief illness. He died peacefully in the early hours of Monday the 3rd August 2026, surrounded by loved ones, his beautiful voice and songs filling the room.'
Stephen Douglas is John's brother, and the pair, along with Livingston, had been part of the band since its formation in 1986. John was born in Irvine, North Ayrshire, and played on all seven of the band's studio albums, including their 1990 debut Cake, which featured the hit single 'Obscurity Knocks'.

Hundreds of fans took to social media to express their grief. One fan wrote: 'Such sad news – Was an absolute honour to host John at The Tin in Coventry.' Another added: 'A real gem of a man. I met one of my heroes, he became a friend, the kind that rarely comes along. A gem. I'll miss you John, we all will.' A third described John as the 'heart of TCS.'
The Trashcan Sinatras achieved international success with Cake, which spent three months on the Billboard 200 chart and was followed by tours in the UK and North America. The band's other hits included 'Only Tongue Can Tell' and 'Circling the Circumference'.

John Douglas's contribution to the band was significant, with his songwriting and vocals helping to define the group's jangly, melodic sound. The release of Ever the Optimist on July 31, 2026, marked a return after a decade-long gap, and fans had been eagerly awaiting the new material.
