Gurbachan Singh Athwal, 75, from Southall, appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates Court and pleaded not guilty to fraud by abuse of position. The former Labour councillor for Heston East, who lost the Labour whip when charged, requested that his case be heard in Crown Court.
The prosecution alleged that Athwal dishonestly abused his position as treasurer of Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall between 2021 and 2022. The charity manages the two largest Gurdwaras - Sikh places of worship - in Southall. He remains a trustee of the charity, according to the Charity Commission website.
Allegations of double counting and misappropriation
During 2022, the prosecution claims there were financial irregularities in paying contractors, suppliers and petty cash payments. The court heard that Athwal allegedly engaged in "double counting payments" and misappropriated funds amounting to £12,682.
Athwal arrived at the court wearing a charcoal gray suit, accompanied by his legal team. When asked whether he would like the case settled in Crown Court or by Magistrates, he stood with his hands crossed in front of him and opted for Crown Court.
Next court appearance scheduled
Athwal is now scheduled to appear before Isleworth Crown Court on Tuesday, November 24. This is also the date of the next scheduled Hounslow Council meeting, one he would usually attend.
The legal team for Athwal noted that the venue of the trial may have to be moved, given that Athwal is a local councillor in a ward approximately two miles away from Isleworth.
