M2 closed both ways for hours after serious crash

The M2 in Kent is expected to remain closed for several hours following a serious collision that occurred at approximately 9.10pm on October 27 on the coastbound carriageway near Medway Services.

Both directions of the motorway are shut, with the westbound carriageway closed between junction 5 (Maidstone/Sittingbourne) and junction 4 (Gillingham), and the eastbound carriageway closed from junction 3 (Chatham) to junction 5.

Emergency services at the scene

Kent Police and National Highways traffic officers are at the scene helping to manage traffic. The road is likely to stay closed for hours, and drivers have been warned to expect disruption and allow extra time for their journeys.

Westbound drivers are being asked to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs. The route takes them from the M2 at junction 5 onto the southbound A249, then onto the M20 westbound at junction 7, before joining the A228 northbound at junction 4 of the M20, and finally reaching junction 2 of the M2.

Diversion routes for eastbound traffic

Eastbound drivers should follow the solid circle diversion symbol, taking them from the M2 at junction 3 onto the A229 southbound towards Maidstone. After about two miles, they should exit at the Cobtree Roundabout and join the M20 eastbound.

They should then exit the M20 at junction 7 and take the A249 northbound for approximately five miles to reach junction 5 of the M2. Emergency services remain on site, and further updates are expected as the situation develops.
