The Sex Pistols Announce 50th Anniversary Punk Tour with London Dates

The iconic punk rock band The Sex Pistols have officially announced a major UK and Ireland tour to commemorate 50 years of punk music. Dubbed "The Anarchy In The UK Tour," this limited run of shows will feature two highly anticipated London performances in December, marking five decades since the release of their seminal hit track of the same name.

Tour Details and Lineup

Formed in 1975, The Sex Pistols will reunite with guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook, and bass guitarist Glen Matlock for this special anniversary celebration. The band will be joined by acclaimed musician Frank Carter, known for his work with Gallows and Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes, who will handle vocal duties throughout the tour.

The tour kicks off at Dublin's 3 Arena on December 7 before moving to Edinburgh's Corn Exchange on December 9 and Glasgow's O2 Academy on December 10. The final leg features two London shows: one at the O2 Academy Brixton on December 18 and a concluding performance at Eventim Apollo on December 20.

Historical Context and Legacy

The Sex Pistols, renowned for their rebellious spirit and provocative lyrics challenging the monarchy and political establishment with songs like "God Save The Queen" and "Anarchy In The UK," originally disbanded in 1978. Frontman John Lydon, famously known as Johnny Rotten, went on to form Public Image Ltd (PiL) and has publicly stated he will not participate in this reunion.

This follows a high-profile legal battle where Lydon attempted to prevent the band's songs from being used in the Disney+ series "Pistol." Despite this, the band reunited last year for select gigs and returned in 2024 with Carter joining the lineup, receiving positive reception from fans and critics alike.

Band Members Reflect on Punk Legacy

Drummer Paul Cook reminisced about the band's early days, describing their initial performances as "a commando raid" where venues often didn't even know they were playing. "We just turned up and set up. It was all a learning curve for us, getting out there and playing live," Cook recalled. "With Anarchy, I think we tapped into a feeling of unrest around the country at the time. The message was pretty simple – just have a go and get out there and do whatever you want to do. It was a new world."

Guitarist Steve Jones emphasized the importance of enjoyment in their performances, stating, "If it ain't fun, I ain't doing it. I'm too old for bull****" Cook added about their current shows, "We've had a blast. People want to come and see us play live. If I must say so myself, we are a great live band."

Additional Summer Performances

In addition to the December tour, The Sex Pistols will perform several shows this summer at notable venues across the UK. These include The Piece Hall in Halifax on July 11, Castlefield Bowl in Manchester on July 12, Cardiff Castle on August 1, and Scarborough Open Air Theatre on August 2.

This anniversary tour represents a significant moment in music history, celebrating the enduring impact of punk rock and The Sex Pistols' revolutionary contribution to the genre. Fans can expect a powerful blend of classic hits and raw energy that defined a generation.
