Melody's Echo Chamber Unveils 'Unclouded': A Balmy Dreampop Garden
Melody's Echo Chamber 'Unclouded' Album Review

French artist Melody Prochet, known professionally as Melody's Echo Chamber, has released her fourth studio album, titled 'Unclouded' on the Domino label. The record presents an enchanted, balmy garden of baroque-infused dreampop, designed as a calming auditory retreat.

A Collaborative Yet Singular Vision

Prochet is renowned for her curated collaborations. Her 2012 self-titled debut was shaped by Tame Impala's Kevin Parker. For her 2018 follow-up 'Bon Voyage', she worked with Swedish psychedelic outfit Dungen, whose guitarist Reine Fiske has become a recurring contributor, featuring again on 2022's 'Emotional Eternal' and now on 'Unclouded'.

This latest project is steered by producer and co-writer Sven Wunder. The album boasts a dizzying array of talent, including string arrangements from Josefin Runsteen and percussive contributions from Malcolm Catto, a noted collaborator with DJ Shadow.

An Unclouded Musical Landscape

Despite the wealth of input, Prochet's unique artistic voice remains central. The album's title is borrowed from a quote by legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki: "You must see with eyes unclouded by hate." This philosophy guides the music, which lifts her signature airy vocals and intricate soundscapes into brighter, more serene terrain.

The sonic palette is rich and varied:

  • Blooming strings define the beautiful 'Broken Roses'.
  • Sprinkles of xylophone on 'Burning Man' evoke the tranquillity of a Japanese garden.
  • Certain tracks channel a 1990s dreampop sensibility, recalling acts like Saint Etienne or Lush.

Pacing and Atmosphere

The album's generally becalmed atmosphere is punctuated by subtle shifts. 'Into Shadows' introduces a brisker pace adorned with mellifluous guitar runs, while 'Memory's Underground' offers another gentle tempo change complemented by strings reminiscent of The Beatles.

While 'Unclouded' may not be driven by obvious standalone hits, its collective strength lies in crafting a consistent and immersive mood. The overall effect is that of a beautifully arranged, coherent world—a balmy reverie that serves as a perfect, calming escape for the listener.
